Mumbai:Medical student commits suicide after casteist harassment

Dr.Payal Tadvi a postgraduate student committed suicide on May 22 after being tortured by seniors through casteist slurs. Dr.Payal was a postgraduate student of gynaecology in the Topiwala National Medical college that is also attached to the BYL Nair hospital. She recently joined the college on May 1, 2018 for her Postgraduate course. However, soon after, she was allegedly tortured and ragging was done by her seniors.

 

All the seniors has been booked under  sections from the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

 

Dr.Payal’s parents have accused of officials not taking any heed to their complaints and instead she was instead advised to focus on her studies rather than responding to any such acts.No other strict action was taken.Abeda Dr.Payal’s mother said, "Had they have acted swiftly and shown sensitivity, my daughter would have been alive today. I had called on May 22, when she told me her seniors were still torturing her. I told her that her father and I were coming to Mumbai to file a complaint at the hospital and the police station, but she couldn't bear it any longer."

 

After some time of the conversation, one of Dr Payal's friends  came to call her for dinner, but she when she didn’t respond guards were informed.On breaking the door she was found hanging from a dupatta by a ceiling fan in the room.

 

Dr Payal was taunted about her caste and her securing the PG admission through reservation belonging to Scheduled Tribe category .The identified seniors are named Dr. Hema Ahuja, Dr. Bhakti Mehar and Dr. Ankita Khandelwal.Abeda said, "We had started reporting this to the officials concerned.The parents are demanding strict action to be taken against the accused.”We come from the tribal category; my daughter had worked  hard to get a seat in the MBBS and PG courses. She was very hardworking and sensitive as well,it was her dream to work as a gynaecologist in rural areas. But all of those dreams have now gone," said Salim,Dr.Payal’s father, "I want the cops to punish them as well as officials who didn't pay heed to her complaints and tried to push the matter under the rug,” he added.
