Shiv Sena has demanded for “burqa ban” and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to follow the step taken by Sri Lanka in the wake of the bombings which took place on April 21.

"This restriction has been recommended as an emergency measure to ensure the security forces do not encounter difficulties in identifying anybody. People wearing face-masks or burqas could pose a threat to national security," the Sena said in an editorial in the party mouthpieces, "Saamana" and "Dopahar Ka Saamana", NDTV reported.

The Sena praised the move by Sri Lankan government and called it to be a work of “great courage”.

Several leaders and political parties have reacted on the demand with the national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), GVL Narsimha Rao opposing it saying there's "no need for India to ban" burqa.Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, also opposed saying."Not all women who wear burqa are terrorists, if they are terrorists their burqa should be removed. It's a tradition and they have the right to wear it, there shouldn't be a ban on burqa in India.”IndiaTv Reported. On the other hand,BJP candidate from Bhopal Lok Sabha Constituency,Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur “supported” the demand calling it to be a decision that is needed to be taken for national interest.

Several Muslim leaders including AIMIM leader, Asaduddin Owaisi has alleged the demand to be unconstitutional and violation of freedom rights. The AIMIM leader slammed Shiv Sena's article in its mouthpiece, calling it to be violation of the Model Code of conduct and urged the Election Commission to look into it. He said,”Supreme Court ‘s judgement on privacy clearly lays down that choice is now a fundamental right. It's a violation of the MCC, I request EC to take immediate note of it, it's an attempt to create polarization.” ANI reported .
