Rabindranath Das, was at the sea clinging onto a bamboo for five days. He was without food in the turbulent Bay of Bengal, after his ship sank. A Bangladeshi ship rescued Rabindranath, in the Chittagong coast after which he was brought to Kolkata for treatment. On July 6, Rabindranath and his ship were caught in heavy rainfall which the latter could not survive and drowned to the rain. Since then he solely survived on the water till the day he was rescued by the crew of the Bangladeshi ship MV Jawad on July 10th. Das along with 14 other fishermen set sail to the deep sea on July 4th, hailing from Narayanpur in South 24 Parganas district Kakdwip. The group was on board of the ship FB Nayan-I.
Due to the heavy rainfall and strong waves, the ship capsized. Three of the men on board got trapped within, while the other 11 and Das fled from the ship and jumped into the sea. However, in the following days, other 11 fishermen were drowned. Despite the sinking of the ship, his colleague's death, and the strong sea Das survived and stayed afloat. After days of constant battle with the sea, Das was finally spotted by the Bangladeshi vessel on July 10 near Chittagong. The rescue took more than two hours, in which they even lost the sight of Das, but in the end, he was finally rescued.
"All I can recollect now is that my trawler capsized and we jumped into the water and were floating. I did not eat during the entire time I was floating. There was intermittent rain and big waves. I drank water when it rained,"Das said, on Sunday after returning to Kolkata.
With all the happiness of getting rescued Das still is not happy and upset about his nephew who drowned only a few hours before the rescue.
"We were floating together. He had a life jacket. But since he was very much scared, I was carrying him on my shoulders for days. But he drowned shortly before I was picked up by the ship,"Das said.
