One of the accused harasser behind Mumbai Doctor’s Suicide gets arrested

The Agripada police on Tuesday made their first arrest of one of the three doctors in connection with the Payal Tadvi suicide case. The accused arrested Tuesday afternoon is named to be Bhakti Mehre, who worked at BYL Nair Hospital. The accused was on the run from the day 26-year-old Payal Tadvi committed suicide. Mehre is accused for abetting the suicide of Payal, a junior at Mumbai’s BYL Nair Hospital. The police reported that their teams were in action since Monday and they widened their search when they got to know that Dr. Mehre was hiding in Mumbai itself and then led to her arrest today. The officials reported that they are investigating the case and also questioning Dr. Mehre about the whereabouts of the other two accused.
Payal Tadvi was the second year resident doctor from BYL Nair hospital, who ended her life on May 22 giving harassment by three senior doctors the reason for the same. Dr. Tadvi was the first to pursue medical in the family. Tadvi belonged to the Adivasi Tribal Bhil community, a scheduled tribe. Tadvi being from ST community and then working as a doctor was not taken well by the senior doctors. Her husband and mother have accused the three senior doctors for harassing and passing casteist slurs over her which led her to commit suicide. According to the mother and the husband, she complained to the authorities but no action was taken in favor of her. However, the management and authorities refuse about any such complaint that had been registered. Tadvi’s friend at hospital also told the reporters that she had complained to the authorities but no action was taken for her leading to which she took herself into commitment of suicide.
Dr. Tadvi’s husband Salman and mother Abida has demanded for “strictest action” against the three women doctors. Her mother complains about the authorities that they didn’t take desired action. She said that her daughter was quite stressed and depressed with the behavior of her seniors which later led her to kill her own self. Tadvi’s husband has alleged the three doctors of harassing, ragging and humiliating her on WhatsApp as well by using casteist remarks.
The three doctors were charged under the Atrocities Act, the Anti-Ragging Act and the IT Act and Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code. However, the three accused wrote a letter to the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) that they should their side and should not do the investigation “through police force and media pressure”. Whereas, on the other hand, Dr. Tadvi’s parents along with Members of Dalit and Tribal organization and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi have demonstrated the protest outside the hospital. The investigation is on by the police officials and also the National Commission for Women and State’s Women Commission.
