Cyclone Fani is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours and into a very severe cyclonic storm during the subsequent 24 hours, the Met department said on Sunday. Cyclone Fani currently lays over east Equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO) and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal.
"The depression over east Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining the southeast Bay of Bengal moved further northwestwards, intensified into a deep depression and lay centred about 870 km east-southeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 1210 km southeast of Chennai and 1500 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh," it said.
The cyclonic storm is very likely to reach near the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh by the evening of April 30. Light to moderate rainfall is expected at a few places over north coastal Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra Pradesh on April 30 and May 1 and could witness extreme sea conditions.
Thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds, with wind speeds reaching 40 to 50 km/hr and lightning is likely to occur at isolated places in all districts of coastal Andhra Pradesh on Monday and Tuesday. Light to moderate rain or thunder showers is likely at other places over coastal AP during the same period, according to the IMD.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas: along the coasts of Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.
