The Election Commission said on Tuesday that assembly polls for J&K are likely to be held at the late tail of the month and the schedule for the same will be announced by EC after Amarnath Yatra. The annual pilgrimage to Amarnath will end on August 15 and therefore the schedule will be declared thereafter. The election phase is necessary for the state as the state has been under Governor rule since June last year. The BJP ended its alliance with Mehbooba Mufti’s People Democratic Party and since then its under Governor rule. President rule in the state came into existence since December.
No date has been finalized as Election Commission wants to take every step crucially for conducting the elections in the state. The state has always been under a keen eye watch, whether politically or democratically. Kashmir especially has been quite a lot affected by the traumas of terrorism and therefore the task of constituting free and fair elections is a tough task for the commission as well as the administrative blocks. In the General Elections as well, Kashmir saw only 8% casting of votes. That highlights that the traumas of terrorism and other anti civic issues is on so high raise that it becomes difficult for the public as well as the management to participate and hold the elections respectively
The official statement from the Election Commission read, “The Commission will keep on regularly and on real time basis monitoring the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, taking inputs from all necessary quarters and after the conclusion of Amarnath Yatra will announce the election schedule for the conduct of assembly election in Jammu and Kahmir.”
