Heart disease, also known as coronary heart disease (CHD), continues to be the leading cause of death in adults today. Basically, heart disease occurs when the coronary arteries do not have a proper supply of nutrients and oxygen to the organ due to damage. There are many reasons why a person's risk of suffering from heart disease increases. However, researchers have found a surprising risk factor associated with heart disease - premature graying of hair. According to a study by the European Society of Cardiology, premature baldness, and hair whitening may increase the risk of heart disease compared to obesity in men under 40. Earlier, Indian researchers found that baldness and premature white hair increase the risk of heart disease in young men, which may also apply to women.

What is the relationship between heart disease and white hair? For the study conducted by the European Society of Cardiology, the researchers analyzed 545 adult males in the age group of 42 to 64 years. The researchers divided the participants into three groups based on the amount of gray hair - pure black hair, pure white, and gray. The findings showed that men (about 80 percent of them) had the most white hair with signs of heart disease. However, having white hair does not always mean that you are suffering from some serious disease, but may indicate that something is not right with your health. Common causes of premature hair whitening include stress, genetics, thyroid, autoimmune diseases, vitamin-B12 deficiency, smoking, etc.
