Digital Forensics has become a highlighted topic in the field of forensic science. It is very much helpful in recovering the traces or clues found in any digital device. Digital forensic is capable of retrieving any information/strong digital data from any kind of digital device. Digital forensics has various applications among which the most common is to support a case before getting into the boundary of courts.
Forensics have other features in private sectors like Integral corporate investigation & Intrusion investigation. The technical aspect of the investigation is divided into various fields like Computer forensics, Network forensics, Forensic data analysis, Handy device forensic analysis. The forensic tests include procedures such as seizures, forensic imaging, analysis of digital media & production of the report.
A digital forensic investigation commonly consists of 3 stages:-
1. Imaging of exhibits;
2. Analysing &
3. Report production.
In the 1st process, the Computer's volatile memory is captured & an extra sector level duplicate of the media, which is needed, is created. Then the extracted data is hashed & the values are compared to the copy for verification. Further, the actual results may vary during the process or verification during the investigation. But still, we can retrieve data by some common methodologies.
In the 2nd process, i.e, the data analysis is examined under structured data with an aim to discover and analyze patterns of misc. activities resulting in crime.
In the 3rd process, all the retrieved data are finally arranged into a report format & further actions are taken place based on the investigation.
