Lifeline Express also known as Jeevan Rekha Express is the worlds first hospital on a train. This train provides medical facilities to the people who are living in remote areas of the country and can't afford expensive treatments. The train first started its journey from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
Lifeline Express: A Train that Heals You!
How did it come into existence? A Mumbai based NGO known as Impact India Foundation came up with the idea of providing medical aid to people living in faraway rural areas without any good medical facilities available. The idea was proposed to the ministry of railways which was accepted shortly. The railways agreed in providing a 3 coach train with water and electric supply, while the medical services will be managed by the NGO.
Each bogey of the train is air-conditioned. The coaches have medical supplies, power generators, and pantry cars. The train also has an operation theater to perform immediate operations. Arrangements are also made for the comfort of the medical team.
The team on the train provide treatments for cataract surgeries, dental surgeries, fractures and burns, and various kinds of curative diseases. The Lifeline Express has also started treating cancer patients. Apart from these services various kinds of awareness programs are also held by the medical team. Professionals from around the world have contributed their services to this noble cause which has helped over 1 million people to be treated for free of cost. Hats off.
