May Day is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement which occurs every year on May Day (1 May), an ancient European spring festival. It is also known as International Workers' Day, Labour Day, and Workers' Day.
It is a holiday created by socialists and labor organizers in commemoration of the Haymarket Riot of May 4th, 1886 in Chicago. The revolutionary ideas of socialism and Marxism caught on with many of these disenfranchised and antagonized laborers, and the movement for an eight-hour day which resulted in dangerous and violent riots
The first of May is a national, public holiday in many countries across the world, in most cases as "Labour Day", "International Workers' Day" or some similar name – although some countries celebrate a Labour Day on other dates significant to them, such as the United States, which celebrates Labour Day on the first Monday of September.

May Day in India, was when the country witnessed the first celebration of Labour Day in 1923 in Madras. Led by Singaravelar, leader of the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan, two meetings were held, one at Triplicane Beach and one near the Madras High Court. It was at these meetings that a resolution was passed urging the British government to declare May 1 as Labour Day and also a government holiday.
Another cultural May Day celebration was in praise of Dionysus and Aphrodite, the Greek gods of grape harvest and love respectively.
There is the distress call made by ships and aircraft ‘Mayday’, as well.
