Ration Will Be Provided Even To Those Who Don't Have Ration Cards | Public Distribution System (PDS)

In the case - Aayom Welfare Society v. Union of India (30th April 2020)
The petitioner requested the Central Government to provide ration to the poor and to those who are being exploited by rich and powerful people without ration cards. Fact Aayom Welfare Society filed a case against the Central Government for migrant workers and other poor people who aren't having their ration cards with them. They also demanded the universalization of the Public Distribution System (PDS). They requested to provide ration to more poor people, migrant Committees, homeless, elderly, nomadic tribes, and downtrodden as the government has the surplus of food grains with them.
Public Distribution System (PDS): Public Distribution System is the channel through which food grains are being provided to poor people through the network of more than 4 lakh fair price shops. Over 80 crore people are registered under PDS. Under this system, poor people are given 5 kg per month at the price of Rs 2 /kg for wheat and Rs 2/kg for rice. But recently due to lockdown, the government on 26th March 2020 announced 7kg per person will be supplied over the next three months. Held In this case, the Supreme Court held that the Central Government will provide poor and downtrodden people ration whether they have Ration cards or not under the Public Distribution System.
