Art is what connects us from different parts of the world, different lifestyles and brings us together to appreciate the beauty of something that exists amidst us, a non-living form kept alive through our love and passion for it. Dance is a form of art, movement of limbs and graceful twirls, silhouettes of bodies as they waltz and twist and turn conveying a story that transcends language and structure.

International Dance Day 2019

Today, 29th of April is celebrated as International Dance Day. In 1982 the Dance Committee of the ITI founded International Dance Day to be celebrated every year on the 29th April, anniversary of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), the creator of modern ballet.  Every year a message from an outstanding choreographer or dancer is circulated throughout the world. The author of the message is selected by the International Dance Committee of ITI and the Executive Council of ITI. The message is translated into numerous languages and circulated globally.

"The intention of the International Dance Day Message is to celebrate dance, revel in the universality of this art form, cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers, and bring people together with a common language - dance."

Dance is perhaps, one of the most openly expressed art forms. It witholds nothing, no hidden meaning in its life and only seeks to engage the audience and satiate the feelings within the dancers themselves. Dance could be the breathtaking performance of ballet, the strong and bold movements of hip hop, graceful dance of various countries which display their tradition and culture, underground contemporary or historical, dances that are so intimidating they are almost on the verge of being obscenely captivating, ballroom dances - all of these and much more represent dance and everything it is.

A celebration on the day itself or around it can be organized and promoted by anyone and everyone. Dance venues, theatre and dance institutions, theatre, dance and performing arts universities, government institutions, ministries of cultures, dance makers and dance lovers all over the world are invited to celebrate International Dance Day.
