The Uttar Pradesh government has successfully set up the verification process at ration shops providing subsidized grains to the poor to stop illegal diversion of food. In an interaction with media here, state's Food and Civil Supplies minister Atul Garg said EPOS (Electronic Point of Sale) has been installed at the ration shops across the state, as the machine verifies public distribution system's beneficiaries with their thumb impressions, ensuring that only those entitled to get subsidized food to receive it.

Garg said over 50 lakh poor families did not get subsidized grains while food meant for 1.75 crore people was diverted to "fake" beneficiaries earlier but the BJP government in the state in coordination with the Centre has taken corrective measures.

To a question about the brutal murder of a two-year-old girl in Aligarh, an incident which has triggered nation-wide outrage, the minister said the state government has taken prompt action as main accused have been arrested. The government has also suspended cops accused of negligence and constituted an SIT to investigate the case, he said.
