The Biggest Eid Blockbusters in Bollywood
1. Beta [2 April 1992]
Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit starrer Beta a remake of Tamil film Enga Chinna Rasa which starred K. Bhagyaraj and Radha was a success at the box office. A Simpleton who loves his stepmom who in actually wants to ruin his life. The attempts are foiled by his wife who is street-smart in nature. Directed by Indra Kumar the film with its chartbuster music and screenplay became a blockbuster at the box office.
2. Judwaa [26th January 1997]
Considered as Salman Khan's first Eid hit, Judwaa a remake of Nagarjuna's Telugu hit Hello Brother which was a remake of Jackie Chan's Twin Dragons was directed by David Dhawan. The film released on 26th January 1997 coinciding with Republic Day became a turning point in Salman Khan's career. The film's comedy and the music were hugely popular among audiences. David Dhawan later remade the film in 2017 Judwaa 2 with his son Varun Dhawan in the lead. The remake cum sequel too was a box office success.
3. Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham [14th December 2001]
Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham also popularly known as K3G is considered to be one of the biggest Eid Blockbusters. The Karan Johar directed family drama broke many records upon its release. When the elder but the adopted son of a rich family is banished from the house for marrying a middle-class woman the younger son pledges to reunite the family. Every song of the film was a chartbuster, from the iconic Sooraj Hua Maddham to the peppy Shava Shava everyone was crazy. The film has gained a huge cult following and is also considered to be one of the best multi-starrers in Indian Cinema as well.
4. Kal Ho Naa Ho [28th November 2003]
Another Dharma-SRK film, this film too was a box office success upon release, Directed by then debutante Nikhil Advani the film revolved around a terminally ill patient who falls in love with his neighbor but refuses to disclose her because of his condition. Shah Rukh Khan for his portrayal as Aman a fun loving but terminally ill patient was praised by critics and audiences. The soundtrack which was composed by the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is considered to be one of their best albums ever, with the title track being the biggest hit of the year.
5. Veer-Zaara [12th November 2004]
Yash Chopra's epic love saga Veer-Zaara which revolved around an Indian Air Force Pilot Veer Pratap Singh and Zaara Hayaat Khan a Pakistani Muslim from a rich political family was a huge hit at the box office. When Veer is falsely imprisoned in Pakistan a Pakistani lawyer Saamiya Siddiqui [played by Rani Mukerji] tries to free him and reconnect with Zaara. The film was the year's highest grossing flick and also received strong critical acclaim. The music which was composed by the late Madan Mohan from his unused tunes for Mausam and was recreated by Sanjeev Kohli was the highest selling album of the year as well. Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta who played Veer and Zaara respectively received various awards for their portrayal of the characters.
Special Mention to Aitraaz which clashed with Veer-Zaara and was a box office success.
