The Vice-Chancellor of Birla group, Basant Kumar Birla, expired at the age of 98 in Mumbai on Wednesday. Born on 12 January 1921, BK Birla was an excellent statesman, industrialist of Century Textiles, Owner of Krishnarpan Charity Trust and B K Birla Institute of Engineering and Technology and secretary of several similar trusts and institutions.
He was the youngest son of the Industrialist Ghanshyam Das Birla and took over the business at the age of 15 and later took the charge of Kesoram Industries. He used to live with his daughters, Jaishree Mehta, and Manjushree Khetan. His son Aditya Birla had already died in 1995. Kumar Mangalam Birla, the owner of Birla chain is his grandson. He also wrote several books and novels including an autobiography name Swatva Sukhay. Birla was associated with Cotton, Tea, Coffee, Polyester, Naylon Yarn, Shipping, Tyrecard, Transparent sheets, Cement, Plywood, MDF board, etc.
