Prince William was the first Heir to this 'Normal' thing

PRINCE WILLIAM was brought up in as "normal" a way as possible by his mother Princess Diana – and was even the first royal heir to do a very ordinary thing as a child, a documentary revealed.William was the first heir to attend public nursery – Mrs Mynors’ Nursery School – in September 1985 when he was three years old. The Royal Family had previously not attended a nursery outside the confines of Buckingham Palace but it is believed that the Princess of Wales wanted to change this for the sake of her sons. Mrs Mynors’ was a Montessori school and Diana herself has been an assistant at a Montessori nursery called the Young England Kindergarten in Pimlico.

Decades later, Prince George also attended a school that uses this learning method, attending Westacre Montessori School in Norfolk. It seems that Princess Diana may have started her own tradition of keeping royal children’s lives as normal as possible even at nursery age.Prince Harry told an ITV documentary in 2017: “She made the decision that no matter what, despite all the difficulties of growing up in that limelight and on that royal stage, she was going to ensure that both of us had as normal a life as possible.” However, there was still a vast difference between the mass media attention of William’s first day versus the privacy his son enjoyed in 2016.

William was greeted by around a hundred photographers as he arrived with Charles and Diana, holding hands with his mother. Royal expert Katie Nicholl told the documentary ‘Prince William at Thirty’, uploaded to YouTube in June 2012, that William was “clinging to his mother”. She added: “You could see that he was – as any boy would be about their first day at school – nervous.” William wore a striped jumper, red shorts and red shoes and was greeted by the headmistress, who knelt down to take his hand.Dickie Arbiter, Diana’s former press secretary, told the documentary: “And off he went, just glancing very briefly for the photographers to get a picture.” At nursery, William was placed in a group called the cygnets and Mrs Mynor said her new student “liked it”.As he left, he showed photographers a mouse finger puppet he had made.

This experience was very different to his son Prince George’s first day at school, which was a discreet affair.No media were invited to attend, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge dropped him off themselves and it was Kate who took the photographs of him outside the nursery. However, it has also emerged that William may have been a little naughty at school – getting into fights and causing mischief. Ms Nicholls said: “One of the nicknames for him when he was little was Basher Wills because he wasn’t afraid to get into a few scraps.” Meanwhile, Mr Arbiter added: “He was a little bit of a daredevil, he liked to get into all sorts of mischief.”
