A Bangladeshi known as the “Tree Man” because of bark like growths on his body said on Monday that he wants to cut down his hands to relieve him from unbearable pain. The man named as Abul Bajandar has already had 25 operations since 2016 to remove growths from his hands and feet caused by a rare syndrome.
Bajandar suffers from epidermodysplasia verruciformis, a rare genetic condition also known as the “tree man syndrome”. Bajandar is facing serious problems and unbearable pain due to the syndrome. He said he wanted to go abroad for better treatment but he doesn’t have the money to cover the expenses. He said, “I cannot bear the pain anymore. I can’t sleep at night. I asked the doctors to cut off my hands so I can at least get some relief.” His mother Amina Bibi supported his plea saying, “At least he will be free of pain. It’s a hellish condition.”
His treatment is now undertaken by Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The Chief Plastic Surgeon, Samanta Lal Sen said that a board of seven doctors will discuss his condition on Tuesday. Sen said, “He gave his personal opinion. But we will do whatever is the best solution for him.”
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina promised free treatment for Bajander after his plight made to national and international highlights. The hospital also treated a young Bangladeshi girl suffering from the same in 2017 and declared her surgery a success. Later her father declared that the growth started again and returned in even greater numbers. However, surgery for Bajandar is planned with more precision and care. However, this syndrome is believed to be found in less than half a dozen people around the world.
