After a defeat in the Lok Sabha elections of 2019, Congress president Rahul Gandhi seems to be shattered as he offers to resign as the Congress chief. The Congress president held a meeting with senior party leaders where he proposed to quit. Gandhi also told a group of senior Congress leaders including his mother Sonia Gandhi that he takes full responsibility for the election defeat and that he is willing to resign as the party’s president. Congress spokesperson, Randeep Singh Surjewala denied the reports of Rahul Gandhi’s offer to resign.
UPA Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi has also rejected Rahul’s offer to resign and also has urged him to consult the Congress Working Committee (CWC). Sources also indicated that Congress Working Committee (CWC) will meet in a week to discuss Rahul Gandhi’s offer. Addressing a brief press conference on Thursday evening, Congress President took “full responsibility” of the defeat, which saw several Congress loyal and dedicated supporters such as Jyotiraditya Scindia and Veerappa moily lose in their constituencies. He further said, “Frankly, today is not the day to discuss what I think went wrong because people of India have clearly decided that Narendra Modi is going to be their Prime Minister and as an Indian I respect that”. He also said, “I told before the campaign that voters will decide the final verdict and they have given their verdict. Today is the day to wish Modi all the best, hopes he looks after the interest of the nation”.
On being asked about fixing responsibility for loss, Rahul Gandhi said, “This is between my party and I. between me and the Congress CWC”. Reacting to the party’s loss, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also said, “We accept people’s verdict and congratulate PM Modi and BJP workers”. As the final innings of the Lok Sabha elections are set to come to a close, it would be safe to conclude that the Narendra Modi-led NDA government has improved its performance in 2014 and emerged as a stronger force.
