10th of May: The day when the first war of Independence broke out at Meerut in 1857

The atrocity meted out by the British is clearly expressed in many of the historical accounts. The culmination of anger and grief rightly gave rise to a mutiny which later came to be known as the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. The revolt was the result of discontentment simmering out of the minds of the Indians. The causes of the revolt emerged from all aspects, starting from socio-cultural, political and also extending towards the economic issues as well.

Some of the interesting facts about the 1857 revolt are explained below.

The revolt of 1857 greatly changed the history of Indian administration. The immediate impact was, the direct responsibility for the administration of the country was assumed by the British crown. It was at a durbar at Allahabad where the “Queen Proclamation "got issued on November 1, 1858.

It was the first war of independence that reflected the unified struggle of the solider, peasant and democratic classes.

10^TH of May also marks the day when the Indian sepoys bombed and killed many of the British officers in the Meerut Cantonment. It was an outburst of intense oppression faced by the soldiers under the British regime.

The initiation was because of the use of cow and pig fat in the grease of the rifle cartridges used by the soldiers. This had hurt the sentiments of both the Hindus and the Muslims resulting in the outbreak of the war.

Delhi capture took place where the soldiers from Meerut seized control of Delhi and made Bahadur Shah Zafar to ascend the throne of Delhi as the ruler.

Battle of Kanpur took place where Nana Sahib, the adopted son of Baji Rao II, led an army and fought against General Sir Hugh Wheeler, in order to declare himself Peshwa.
